The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
